The Makers play every Tuesday at Seven Grand in downtown Los Angeles. For eight years we have been improvising groove-inspired sets with horns, ambient textures, and the inclusion all our musical influences.
We finally decided to take our music into the studio, and our method was to improvise for 3 full-day sessions and then use the material as a base for exploration of ideas that the studio offers. The process evolved and came to include vocals, electronic samples, strings, more horns, and all the people orbiting our musical world at the time.
This album took on a life of its own. The vast worlds explored could only be reached from our long-time collaborations and close-knit relationships as people. As I listen to the record now, I return immediately to a golden-era when Downtown Los Angeles was just beginning to regenerate, but still a wide open playground for artists to experiment and try out new ideas. Late night loft parties, characters from the streets of Downtown LA, and a motivated band of brothers transitioning from music school into the real world are all moments and memories that are crystallized in this album.
